A Moment's Relief

He sat there, patiently listening, to the inconsistent run-on sentences that blurted out of my mouth.
He paid attention to all my vexations and remained focused.
There was no changing of topics, no avoidance of truth, just listening.
He gazed intently in my eyes as I fought tears.
In the silence he understood, for once he understood.
There in a moment's relief sparked recognition -
of a better future; a better life; a better us.
A second wind; a second cup to fill.
